Gingerbread Houses

For our winter celebration, my class planned and constructed gingerbread houses.  The students had a budget to work with, and had to plan and design their house before they could build it.  I posted a chart (see file for the clipart I used) with all of the available materials and their costs.  Students were required to purchase graham crackers for the walls, and frosting to hold the whole thing together.  After that it was totally up to them, but they had to stay within their $1 budget.

They had to begin by planning their purchases according to the budget.  Then they had to draw a design plan for their house, and write step-by-step directions for its construction.  Our culminating activity was to invite parents to come in and participate in the creation of the gingerbread houses.
