Important information
Ø Labs and Experiments
o Students are expected to follow all guidelines and rules when participating in labs and hands on activities.
o If students are unable to participate in a responsible and mature way, they will not be allowed to continue the project or any other project until the teacher feels students will behave appropriately.
o Not being able to participate in experiments and labs may affect classroom grade and students should keep this in mind.
o These guidelines are for the safety of the students.
v Good common sense is needed for safety in a laboratory. It is expected that each student will work in a responsible manner and exercise good judgment and common sense.
v Never eat, drink, or smoke while working in the laboratory.
v Read labels carefully.
v Wear safety glasses or face shields when working with hazardous materials and/or equipment.
v Keep the work area clear of all materials except those needed for your work. Extra books, purses, etc. should be kept away from equipment.
v Disposal - Students are responsible for the proper disposal of used material if any in appropriate containers.
v Clean up your work area before leaving.
v Wash hands before leaving the lab and before eating.
v Treat every chemical as if it were hazardous.
v Never return chemicals to reagent bottles. (Try for the correct amount and share any excess.)
v Never "smell" a solvent!! Read the label on the solvent bottle to identify its contents.
v Tell the teacher of any spills and broken glassware immediately.
v Clean up spills immediately.
v Never do unauthorized experiments.
v Keep your lab space clean and organized.
v Never taste anything.
v Check your glassware for cracks and chips each time you use it. Cracks could cause the glassware to fail during use and cause serious injury to you or lab mates.
v Maintain unobstructed access to all exits, fire extinguishers, electrical panels, emergency showers, and eye washes.
